In the war against obesity, America now has a new weapon. The FDA authorized Wegovy, a new weight-loss medication, on Friday for patients who are obese or overweight and have at least one weight-related medical condition.

The new weight-loss drug is also known by a different name, Semaglutide. This is a new kind of injection used weekly for adults with obesity or weight-related conditions such as high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, or high blood pressure.

Since 2014, this under-the-skin injection has been the first FDA-approved medication for chronic weight control in people with general obesity or overweight. The medication is approved for chronic weight control in patients with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher who have at least one weight-related illness or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher who have at least one weight-related ailment.

Clinical Test

The FDA decision is based on the findings of a four-phase clinical study that examined the drug’s safety and effectiveness in approximately 4,500 individuals who were overweight or obese. Participants in the experiment were given either a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity or a lifestyle intervention with semaglutide.

Semaglutide is more successful than any other weight loss management medication on the market, according to clinical research. Over the course of 68 weeks, more than half of the individuals dropped more than 15% of their body weight.

Individuals in the semaglutide groups lost 15% to 18% of their body weight in three of the four studies of people who were overweight or obese.

Semaglutide 2.4 mg trial participants were also the most likely to discontinue concomitant glucose-lowering medicines, at 28.6 percent. Still, this percentage was only slightly higher than the 25.1 percent of individuals receiving the standard dose. Only 7.1% of those using the placebo lowered their other diabetic medicines.

The average reduction in body weight achieved by week 68 in the 404 trial participants taking semaglutide 2.4 mg was 9.64 percent, which was significantly greater than the 6.99 percent reduction achieved by the 403 people taking the standard dose and the 3.42 percent reduction achieved by the 403 taking placebo.

The co-primary objective of at least 5% weight reduction was met by 68.8 percent of those receiving semaglutide 2.4 mg and 57.1 percent of those taking semaglutide 1.0 mg, respectively, compared to 28.5 percent of the placebo group.

How the New Weight Loss Drug Works

GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the small intestine that increases insulin production while inhibiting glucagon release, decreasing blood sugar levels. Semaglutide has been shown to improve glycemia as well as a variety of other benefits such as:

  • Neuroprotective
  • Improved HbA1c
  • Non-Diabetic Weight Loss
  • Enhanced Sleep Quality
  • Cardiovascular Benefits
  • Reduced Appetite
  • Smoking Cessation

Precautions for the New Weight Loss Drug

You should not use semaglutide if you are allergic to it or if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Eye problems caused by diabetes (retinopathy)
  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a form of thyroid cancer)
  • Diabetes-related ketoacidosis
  • Stomach or intestinal disorder
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (tumors in your glands)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney disease

Additionally, other kinds of medication can also affect the new weight loss drug. Semaglutide can delay digestion and make it more difficult for your body to absorb any medications you take orally.
